Dennis Muilenburg is president and chief executive officer of Boeing Defense, Space & Security and serves on the company's Executive Council. This $32 billion, 61,000-person business unit is a provider of integrated solutions to meet the enduring needs of defense, government, space, intelligence and security customers in the United States and around the world. Headquartered in St. Louis, the organization has concentrated operations in St. Louis; Southern California; Seattle; San Antonio; Houston; Philadelphia; Mesa, Ariz.; Huntsville, Ala.; the Space Coast of Florida; Washington, D.C., Australia, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
Within Boeing Defense, Space & Security, the Boeing Military Aircraft unit includes tactical and airlift aircraft, rotorcraft, weapons and missiles, U.S. Air Force and international tankers, unmanned airborne systems, and airborne surveillance and engagement programs. Global Services & Support provides aircraft maintenance, modifications and upgrades; supply chain management; engineering and logistical support; pilot and maintenance training; government services; and advanced services. Network and Space Systems consists of information solutions; strategic missile and defense systems; satellites and other space and intelligence systems; electronic mission systems; and space exploration activities. The Phantom Works unit, which includes the Boeing energy business, works with Boeing's Research & Technology organization to develop the technologies necessary to respond to the needs of Boeing's defense, space and security customers.
Prior to his current position, Muilenburg, 48, was president of Global Services & Support, an $8 billion business providing global after-delivery support for military platforms and systems, and a broad array of defense and government services. This includes maintenance, modifications and upgrades for such venerable aircraft as the KC-135 Stratotanker, B-52 Stratofortress, A-10 Thunderbolt, and C-130 Hercules, as well as numerous commercial derivative and executive fleet aircraft such as the VC-25, C-32, and C-40, supply-chain management, performance-based logistics, and engineering services.
Previously, Muilenburg was vice president and general manager of the Boeing Combat Systems division and program manager for Future Combat Systems (FCS), now part of Network and Tactical Systems. His responsibilities included management of the Boeing-led industry team for FCS -- a major U.S. Army modernization initiative to deliver next-generation ground combat systems and link soldiers to a wide range of weapons, sensors, robots, and information systems via mobile networks, improving joint interoperability, shared situational awareness, and more effective mission operations.
Before that assignment, Muilenburg was vice president of Programs & Engineering, Boeing Air Traffic Management, responsible for the overall development of Boeing's program to modernize the air traffic management (ATM) system and support complementary global communication, navigation and surveillance services. Prior to that, he was director of Weapon Systems for the Boeing Joint Strike Fighter program, where he was responsible for overall design, analysis and integration of the Boeing JSF multiservice weapon system. He is co-holder of the patent on the Boeing JSF design concept.
Muilenburg joined Boeing in June 1985 and has held a progression of program management and engineering positions on a broad range of large-scale programs including JAST/ASTOVL, F-22, AFX, Multi-role Fighter, EX surveillance platform, 747 Airborne Laser, Advanced Tactical Fighter, National Aerospace Plane, High Speed Civil Transport, Condor reconnaissance aircraft, and a number of proprietary programs. Born in Iowa, Muilenburg earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University and a master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Washington.
Muilenburg is a member of the board of directors of Caterpillar Inc., a member of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) council of trustees, and serves on the National World War II Museum, Washington University (St. Louis), and St. Louis Science Center boards of trustees. He also is a member of the steering committee of the Defense Industry Initiative.
He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and the Boeing executive focal for Iowa State University.
